What is Dry eye ? Dry eyes can occur when tear production and drainage are not in balance. Tears are produced by several glands in and around the eyelids. Tears are important not only for protection of the ocular surface but also for good vision. Tear layer is made up of 3 different layers. Oil, aqueous, mucus and each has different unique function to keep our eyes healthy. If any of these layers are affected we can experience symptoms of dry eye. Tear production tends to diminish due to several different reasons including: 1)Age 2)Medical conditions such as autoimmune conditions 3)Blepharitis ( Inflammation of eyelid) 4)Environmental factors ( staring at electronic devices, reading) 5)Previous vision correcting surgeries / Eyelid surgeries 6)Medications Treatment options Depending on the severity of dryness, approach to treatment options may vary. Which includes: 1)Lubrications 2)Eye lid hygiene / Warm compress 3)Oral supplements 4)Punctal plugs 5)Prescription topical eye drops & Oral medications 6)Intense Pulse Light treatment & Low Light Level Therapy At Auburn Boda Family Eyecare we use use latest technologies to to diagnose your dry eye symptoms and provide individualized treatment options. Intense Pulse Light is a non-invasive technology that uses specific wavelength of light for dry eye treatment. It works by closing down the abnormal blood vessels around the eyelid margin / reducing the level of inflammation and improving the quality of oil production from meibomian gland. It helps improve the symptoms of dry eye. It may require several treatments (generally 3-4 sessions) to get best clinical results. What is LLLT ? Low Light Level Therapy is a photo-biomodulation therapy that works at the level of mitochondria, enabling increased ATP production, leading to endogenous heat that is useful for ocular surface conditions such as blepharitis, Demodex, styes and chalazion treatments. Treatment is generally 15minutes long and non-invasive, so patients do not feel anything during the treatment.
